$40m Internet Surveillance Contract: Presidency, National Assembly Set For Showdown

The Presidency and the National Assembly are set for a showdown over the controversial $40m Internet surveillance contract awarded by the Federal Government to an Israeli firm, Elbit Systems.

The Federal Government had reportedly awarded the contract to the company to install a system that would enable security agencies to monitor the activities of Nigerians on the Internet.

The House of Representatives had last month asked the Presidency to halt the contract but the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, had at a public forum in Lagos defended the issue.

Controversial Wedding: Deeper Life Suspends Pastor Kumuyi’s Son

The Deeper Christian Life Ministry has suspended John Kumuyi, the second son of its General-Superintendent, Pastor William Kumuyi, over his controversial wedding in Jamaica.

The report was contained in an online video on Tuesday.

John was suspended on account of his bride, who flouted the church’s rules by using make-up and other flashy ensemble that accompanied a fitted wedding gown. The gown also had see-through sleeves. His bride, Love Odih, was accused of flouting the established doctrine of the church on conservative dressing.

Though the new couple, who got married on June 15, 2013, had apologised, the apology did not stem the tide of criticisms by numerous members of the church.

Nigeria Will Make Progress When Good Christians Lead The Way – President Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan, Thursday, asked Nigerians to collaborate and strive to move the nation forward, saying Nigeria will make tremendous progress and experience peace when good Christians resolved to show the light in all their activities.

Jonathan who spoke in Nsukka during the episcopal ordination and installation of Most Rev. Monsignor Godfrey Igwebuike Onah as the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, said time had come for good Christians in the country to rise up and show good examples as true believer in order to correct the ills in the society.

The president, who was represented by Senator Ben Obi, his Special Adviser on Inter-Party Affairs, urged members of the diocese to give necessary support to the new Bishop to enable him advance the work of God in the diocese.He charged Nigerians to always pray for peace in the country, saying that the nation would make progress when the citizenry dwell in peace and harmony.

At the colourful ceremony, His Eminence, Cardinal John Onaiyekan was assisted in the consecration of the new Bishop by Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke, metropolitan Archbishop of Onitsha, and the Bishop Emeritus of Nsukka Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Francis Emmanuel Okobo.

Dignitaries at the event were Senate President, David Mark, Governors Peter Obi and Rochas Okorocha of Anambra and Imo States, respectively, among others.

She is the wife of Ahmed Bola Tinubu, the past two-term governor of Lagos and the leader of Action Congress of Nigeria. Between 1999 and 2007, she was the First Lady of Lagos. Now, she is a Senator of the Federal Republic. In a recent newspaper interview, Mrs. Tinubu denied any interest in the governorship race. She insisted on concentrating on her charity work. Some newspaper reports had also listed the former school teacher as one of the main successors to the incumbent governor. However, in politics, nothing is certain. Egypt’s military deposed the country’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Mursi, Wednesday night after he failed to meet demands to share power with opponents, who thronged the streets of Cairo, state-run media reported.

Troops moved into key positions around the capital and surrounded a demonstration by Mursi’s supporters in a Cairo suburb as a 48-hour ultimatum from the generals expired.

Citing an unnamed presidential source, the state-run newspaper, Al-Ahram, reported that “the General Command of the Armed Forces told President Mursi around 7pm. that he is no longer a president for the republic.”

Chairman of Nigerian Governors Forum, Rotimi Amaechi, has shown that he is indeed a man with a heart of gold as he has wholly donated N15million needed to save OJB’s life as a result of his kidney problems.

According to reports, some close friends of OJB, went to solicit for funds from a popular Lagos-based newspaper editor who in turn contacted Governor Amaechi on OJB’s behalf and he responded promptly.Governor Amaechi will deliver the total money to OJB on Friday, the reports claimed. Leave Tonto Dike, Go After Drug Barons – HURIWA Tells NDLEA. Personally I think she's setting a bad example and should be taught a lesson.

The actress had posted the picture on the social media, an act which drew the attention of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

A non-governmental organization, Human Rights Writers’ Association of Nigeria, (HURIWA) has reacted to the controversy trailing an alleged marijuana picture posted online by popular actress, Tonto Dike. Its spokesman Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, in his reaction had said that “The law is clear and NDLEA has been very clear on the issue. No one is permitted to sell, use, cultivate or encourage the use of Indian hemp in Nigeria. The substance is one of the banned narcotics in the country.”

In a statement jointly issued by the National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and National media Director, Miss. Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said the anti-drug agency was “chasing shadows by threatening to arrest a Nigerian citizen whose alleged ‘marijuana photograph’ does not constitute hard core judicial evidence but rather a social media contraption that may never stand credibility test in the competent court of law.”

HURIWA urged NDLEA not to waste taxpayers’ fund in pursuing a matter that is substantially irrelevant and lacks proof.

The Rights group tasked the agency to instead extend its dragnet and arrest high profile drug barons and peddlers rather than engage in ‘meaningless voyage of discovery’ and ‘attention seeking’ in the media which the Rights group described as ‘witch- hunting’ and an elaborate attempt to undermine the fundamental freedoms of the actress- Miss Tonto Dike who is now being framed up with a trumped up charge of posting ‘marijuana photograph’ on the social media.

It advised the NDLEA to concentrate on how to repair its public image damaged by the costly mistake it made during the arrest, detention and investigation of the popular Yoruba comedian Baba Suwe (the popular expensive faecis/excreta gamble by the NDLEA).”

Patience Jonathan’s Excesses Must Be Curbed

EACH time the wife of the President, Patience Jonathan, hits the road with her long motorcade, including bulletproof and bombproof limousines, or is having a whale of a time at an event, drivers and commuters who find themselves on her routes always have to live with the bitter experience of the encounter. As police empty the roads of traffic, forcing drivers to wait as her glamorous convoy drifts by, motorists are trapped in traffic for hours on end, while social and economic life of the affected community is brought to a halt abruptly.

The recent visit of Mrs. Jonathan to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, in which her security details forcibly grounded the movement of residents, is the latest of such excesses that Nigerians have been forced to endure for the past three years. This impunity must stop. According to newspaper reports, Mrs. Jonathan’s security arrangement paralysed activities in the Port Harcourt Government Reservation Area for the four days of her visit. Armoured personnel carriers were deployed at two points, while gun-wielding operatives manned the points leading to her private residence. Many people missed their appointments because they were prevented from moving in and out of their houses.
