LONDON — Prince William’s wife, Kate, has given birth to an eight-pound baby boy, Buckingham and Kensington Palace both confirmed Monday.
Kensington Palace said the boy weighs 8lbs 6oz and was born at 4:24pm local time. William spent the long hours of labor at Kate’s bedside.
“Her Royal Highness and her child are both doing well and will remain in hospital overnight,” Clarence House said in a Tweet.
“The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are delighted with the news,” said a press release.
An official is en route under police gaurd to Buckingham Palace to display the the news on an ornate easel as per tradition.
It is a historic moment for the British monarchy — the couple’s unnamed first son becomes third in line for the British throne, after Prince Charles and William, and should eventually become king.
The baby’s father, William, was born in the same hospital in 1982. Many Britons remember when his mother, Princess Diana, carried him out of the hospital with Prince Charles by her side.
William and Kate entered St. Mary’s Hospital in central London through a side door early Monday morning, avoiding the world’s media without so much as a single photograph catching the pair.
